Major crops in Mindanao
Mindanao is the agricultural engine of the Philippines and the country's only major oil palm region. The wet, lowland tropical climate and volcanic soils support a wider range of plantation crops than anywhere else in the archipelago.
| Crop | Where it is grown in Mindanao | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oil palm | Agusan del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, Cotabato, Maguindanao, Compostela Valley, Davao del Sur | The only commercial-scale oil palm belt in the Philippines. |
| Coconut | Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Zamboanga peninsula, Misamis provinces | Mindanao alone produces roughly half of national coconut output. |
| Banana (Cavendish) | Davao region, Bukidnon | Export crop shipped to Japan, China, Korea, and the Middle East. |
| Durian | Davao region (Davao is the durian capital of the Philippines) | Smallholder and consolidated estates; benefits from organic mulch under canopy. |
| Rubber | North Cotabato, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan | Mature plantations and replanting programs. |
| Cacao | Davao region, Bukidnon | Often intercropped under coconut or in dedicated orchards. |
Recommended species per crop
Oil palm (immature, 0–3 years)
Aggressive weed suppression and high biomass turnover during the establishment phase. Plant Mucuna bracteata as nursery-raised seedlings (around 320 per hectare, roughly 85–100 g of seed) interplanted with a Pueraria javanica broadcast at 4–6 kg/ha.
Primary: MB · Secondary: PJ
Oil palm (mature, canopy-closed)
Once palms close canopy, MB and PJ thin out. Centrosema pubescens (4–6 kg/ha) and Calopogonium caeruleum (4–6 kg/ha) persist far better under shade and continue contributing nitrogen.
Primary: CP · Secondary: CC
Coconut estates
Pueraria javanica broadcast at 4–6 kg/ha is the long-standing choice under coconut. Calopogonium mucunoides (6–10 kg/ha) establishes rapidly on acidic and degraded soils common in older coconut land.
Primary: PJ · Secondary: CM
Banana plantations (Cavendish)
Pueraria javanica between rows for inter-row ground cover and erosion control on the gentle slopes typical of Davao banana estates. Combine with SoilBoost EA on harvest tracks where compaction is heaviest.
Primary: PJ
Durian and cacao orchards
Centrosema pubescens tolerates partial shade and supplies steady organic matter under fruit trees. Mulch the trunk basin with SoilBoost EA to support soil biology around the root zone.
Primary: CP · Amendment: SoilBoost EA
Rubber plantations
Standard tropical legume mix: PJ broadcast at 4–6 kg/ha at planting, transitioning to CP and CC as the canopy closes after year 4–5.
Establishment: PJ · Mature: CP, CC
Local context: BPI export pathway and Davao logistics
All shipments dispatched from the Philippines move under a phytosanitary certificate issued by the Philippine Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), the National Plant Protection Organization recognised under the IPPC. For Mindanao customers, our Davao City office is the same-island origin point for the entire region, which keeps overland trucking short and reduces consolidation lead time before export sailings.
Primary ports we use for Mindanao bookings:
- Davao International Container Terminal (Sasa, Davao City) — primary outbound port for Davao region and eastern Mindanao.
- General Santos (Makar wharf) — convenient for SOCCSKSARGEN customers (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani).
- Cagayan de Oro / Phividec — serves northern Mindanao plantations in Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.
- Zamboanga — gateway for Zamboanga peninsula and Basilan rubber estates.
SoilBoost EA, the humic acid soil conditioner we recommend alongside the legume cover, is manufactured exclusively by Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. and tested at 60.6% humic acid (CDFA method), 0.45% sulphur, pH 3.84. Standard application is 50–100 kg/ha broadcast, or 10–15 kg/ha as a drench.
Frequently asked questions
Which cover crop is best for Mindanao oil palm plantations?
For immature oil palm, Mucuna bracteata (MB) is the standard choice because of its aggressive weed suppression, deep root system, and high biological nitrogen fixation: 67–84% of plant nitrogen comes from the atmosphere, equivalent to roughly 150–200 kg N/ha/year. Biomass production can reach 28 t/ha in fully open conditions and around 13 t/ha under partial shade. MB is established as nursery-raised seedlings, not by broadcasting seed.
Do you ship to all of Mindanao from Davao?
Yes. Our Davao City office consolidates orders for the entire Mindanao island. We arrange overland delivery to Bukidnon, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Agusan, and Zamboanga, and outbound sea freight from Davao, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, or Zamboanga depending on the destination.
What documentation do I get with my seed order?
Every export shipment ships with a phytosanitary certificate from the Philippine Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), a commercial invoice, packing list, and bill of lading. Domestic Mindanao deliveries ship with a delivery receipt and seed lot reference. Germination data is available on request per lot.
Can I combine cover crops with SoilBoost EA?
Yes, and most of our Mindanao customers do. Establish the legume cover first, then apply SoilBoost EA at 50–100 kg/ha broadcast or 10–15 kg/ha as a drench around the palm or fruit-tree basin. SoilBoost EA and our cover crops are not fungicides or pesticides; they support soil health, which is one of several factors in plant resilience. They are not a treatment for any specific disease.
How is Kudzu Seeds Trading related to Chemiseed?
Kudzu Seeds Trading is the Philippine sister company of Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia). The two companies operate independently and each source their own cover crop seed, while SoilBoost EA is manufactured exclusively by Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. and supplied through Kudzu Seeds Trading in the Philippines.
