Cover crop seeds for plantation managers worldwide
Cover crop seeds for tropical plantation estates worldwide
Kudzu Seeds Trading supplies five tropical leguminous cover crop species, Mucuna bracteata (MB), Pueraria javanica (PJ), Calopogonium mucunoides (CM), Centrosema pubescens (CP), and Calopogonium caeruleum (CC), engineered for large-scale oil palm, rubber, coconut, and cacao estates across Mindanao, Visayas, and Luzon. These species fix 100-200 kg nitrogen per hectare annually, suppress weeds within 6-8 months of establishment, and reduce topsoil erosion by up to 90% on sloped terrain. Kudzu Seeds Trading is the Philippines-based sister company of Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd., drawing on more than 20 years of combined tropical plantation experience. All seeds are exported with ISPM 7 compliant phytosanitary certification for international trade.
Which cover crop for your plantation crop?
Oil palm estates
Primary recommendation: Mucuna bracteata (MB), produces dense, multi-layered ground cover within 8-12 months, fixes 150-200 kg N/ha/year, and effectively suppresses Imperata cylindrica (cogon grass) and other persistent weeds. MB is the industry standard for new oil palm plantings in Malaysia, Indonesia, and increasingly across tropical regions in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
Alternative: Pueraria javanica (PJ), faster establishment (4-6 months), better shade tolerance under mature canopy. Ideal for replanting programs or interrow maintenance in mature stands.
Rubber plantations
Primary recommendation: Pueraria javanica (PJ), PJ's shade tolerance makes it the preferred choice for rubber, where dense canopy closure limits light to the ground layer. PJ maintains ground cover under 70-80% shade, unlike MB which requires more light.
Alternative: Calopogonium mucunoides (CM), faster initial establishment and lower seed cost, suitable for young rubber stands before full canopy closure.
Coconut plantations
Primary recommendation: Centrosema pubescens (CP) or Calopogonium caeruleum (CC), coconut plantations have wider spacing and more light penetration than rubber. CP and CC establish moderate ground cover and integrate well with intercropping systems common in tropical coconut and agroforestry systems. Both tolerate periodic drought and sandy coastal soils.
For intensive weed suppression: Mucuna bracteata (MB) where light conditions permit, particularly in young coconut stands.
Cacao agroforestry
Primary recommendation: Calopogonium mucunoides (CM), CM's moderate growth habit works well in cacao agroforestry systems without competing aggressively with the main crop. It fixes 100-150 kg N/ha/year and decomposes quickly, enriching topsoil organic matter.
Note: Avoid MB in established cacao systems, its vigorous climbing habit can smother young cacao trees without regular management.

What is the minimum order quantity for plantation-scale projects?
We supply seed for projects starting from 50 hectares. For large estates (500+ ha), we offer direct bulk supply with pre-shipment germination testing. Contact us via WhatsApp for current stock and pricing.
How long does it take for cover crops to establish on a plantation?
Most species achieve full ground cover within 6-12 months depending on conditions. PJ and CM are fastest (4-6 months in favorable conditions). MB takes longer (8-12 months) but produces denser, more persistent cover. Establishment is faster during wet season planting.
Can cover crops be established on steep slopes?
Yes. Cover crops are specifically recommended for slope stabilization on terrain of 15-30 degrees. PJ and CM are the best choices for steep slopes due to their rapid root establishment. On very steep terrain (>25 degrees), line sowing along contours is preferred over broadcast sowing. See our erosion control guide.
Do you provide technical support for cover crop establishment?
Yes. Kudzu Seeds Trading provides species selection guidance, seeding rate calculations based on your terrain and crop type, and establishment protocols. Our recommendations are backed by more than 20 years of combined field experience across Malaysian and Southeast Asian plantations.
What about rhinoceros beetle management alongside cover crops?
Cover crops and rhinoceros beetle traps work together in an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. MB ground cover reduces beetle breeding sites by covering decomposing organic matter, while RB Lure pheromone traps actively attract and trap adult beetles. We supply both products.
