Coconet is a woven net of coconut husk fiber (coir) that is laid over bare slopes, embankments, road cuts and riverbanks. It shields the soil from rain, runoff and wind and holds seed and topsoil in place while vegetation establishes. As the plants take over, the net breaks down and returns organic matter to the soil.
Kudzu Seeds Trading, based in Davao City, supplies coconet in 1 m by 50 m rolls by quotation for projects across the Philippines, together with the legume cover crop seed that grows through it, so one inquiry covers the net and the seed for the same slope. Contractors and engineers also call it coco net, coir net, coir mesh or biodegradable erosion control net.
What coconet is used for
- Slope protection on embankments, cut slopes and road cuts
- Erosion control on riverbanks and flood control embankments
- Soil stabilization on post-construction and earthworks sites
- Revegetation, landscaping and site restoration
- Protection of sloping farm and plantation land
How it works
Bare soil on a slope loses its surface to rain and running water before seedlings can root. Coconet covers that surface with a mesh of twisted coir yarn. The open weave lets light, water and seedlings through, while the yarn holds seed, mulch and topsoil in place. Coir is 100 percent natural and biodegradable, so nothing synthetic stays on the slope once the vegetation has taken over.
Coconet and cover crop seed: one job, two products
The net is a temporary cover by design. It protects the slope until plant roots can hold the soil on their own, so the vegetation has to go in at the same time as the net. Sow the seed before you lay the net, or through the mesh straight after.
Our five legume cover crops, Pueraria javanica, Calopogonium mucunoides, Centrosema pubescens, Calopogonium caeruleum and Mucuna bracteata, differ in how fast they cover the ground, how much shade they take and how vigorous they are. Tell us the slope, the rainfall and the shade, and we will suggest a species or a mix. The five-species comparison sets out the differences, and the soil erosion calculator gives a first estimate of soil loss on your site.
Where coconet fits, and where it does not
Good fit: graded slopes and banks where the problem is surface erosion and where vegetation can be established.
Look elsewhere first: a slope that is cracking, bulging or sliding below the surface. Coconet protects the surface; it does not hold a slope that is failing deeper down. Have an engineer assess it before you order.
Installing coconet
- Grade the slope, clear stones and debris, and loosen the surface.
- Spread topsoil or compost where the soil is poor, then sow the seed.
- Anchor the top edge of the roll in a trench along the crest and backfill it.
- Unroll the net down the slope so it lies in full contact with the soil.
- Overlap neighboring rolls and pin the net down with wooden pegs or steel U-pins.
- Follow your project specification for overlaps and pin spacing.

How to order
Coconet is sold by quotation, and the minimum order is one 20-foot container: 298 rolls, or 14,900 square meters of net. Each roll covers 50 square meters before edge overlaps. Send us:
- The area to cover, in square meters, and the delivery location
- The type of site: road cut, embankment, riverbank, or farm or plantation slope
- The specification your project calls for, if any, such as a DPWH item or your engineer's drawing
- Whether you also need cover crop seed for the same area
- Your timeline

Coconet questions
What is coconet made of?
Coir, the fiber from the husk of mature coconuts, twisted into yarn and woven into an open mesh. It is 100 percent coconut fiber.
Is coconet the same as an erosion control blanket?
Not quite. An erosion control blanket is a dense mat of loose fiber held between layers of netting. Coconet is an open woven net, laid over seeded soil, that lets more light and more seedlings through.
How long does coconet last on a slope?
It is meant to be temporary and breaks down as the vegetation takes over. How fast depends on rainfall, sun and soil, so plan for the plants, not the net, to hold the slope in the long run, and sow seed when you install.
Can I order the seed and the net together?
Yes. Coconet and legume cover crop seed can go on one quotation.
How much does coconet cost in the Philippines?
Coconet is priced by quotation, per roll or per square meter. The price depends on the quantity, the grade and the delivery point, and the minimum order is one 20-foot container. Send the area in square meters and the site location, and we will quote for the current lot.
How many rolls of coconet do I need?
Each roll covers 50 square meters before overlaps. Divide the area to be covered by 50, then add extra for the edge overlaps and the anchor trench at the crest. Your quotation confirms the number of rolls.
Can coconet be used on DPWH or LGU projects?
Public works and LGU projects set their own specification for coir netting. Send us the DPWH item, the LGU specification or your engineer's drawing, and we will confirm whether the current lot meets it before you order.
What size are the rolls?
Each roll is 1 m wide and 50 m long, woven from 5 mm coir yarn at 44 by 44 threads per square meter. If your project specifies a different grade or mesh, tell us and we will confirm what the current lot can meet before you order.
What is the minimum order?
One 20-foot container, which holds 298 rolls. That is 14,900 square meters of net, or about 1.5 hectares before edge overlaps are deducted.

Limitations and site considerations
Coconet is a temporary surface cover. It protects bare soil while vegetation establishes, then breaks down, so seed the slope when you install the net. It does not replace engineered support on a slope that is moving below the surface.
What to include in your inquiry
- Country and delivery location
- Area to cover, in square meters
- Type of site: road cut, embankment, riverbank or farm slope
- Project specification, if any
- Whether you also need cover crop seed
- Estimated quantity and timeline
